Endangered/Extinct
27th Jan 2016
This charismatic and universally-loved species – the symbol of our organisation – is one of the rarest and most endangered bears in the world.
Most of the threats to wildlife and habitats come from human pressures and increasing demand for food, fuel or water.
With nearly a quarter of all mammal species and a third of amphibians threatened with extinction, there's an urgent need to safeguard wildlife and the places in which they live.
Black rhino - The smaller black rhino has three remaining subspecies. A fourth – the western black rhino – was declared extinct in 2011. About 96% of black rhinos were lost to large-scale poaching between 1970 and 1992, and there are now just 4,800 individuals in the wild today.
The dodo is an extinct flightless bird that was endemic to the island of Mauritius, east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean.
