We enjoyed Art lessons using the works of Leonid Afremov as inspiration. We sourced images of the work of the artist Leonid Afremov. There are many examples of his paintings online. They are beautiful and particularly colourful. We focused on creating a small area of the painting and then building on this to create a final piece. Lots of discussion centred around the colours used to create a paint palette for Leonid by mixing appropriate colours. We then got very messy as we used our fingers and hands to create the type of marks he makes. The paintings then progressed on as we created the background of leaves. We thought about symmetry and how folding could help to create the reflection on the page. Finally we painted in the tree trunks and added people.

World Animal Day
This month we have been learning about World animal day which was celebrated around the world on the 4th of October. We have been learning that certain species are becoming extinct because of pollution and rubbish. The children thought of different ways that we could protect animals. They came up with ideas such as; giving our pets more space to play, making sure that animals have fresh, clean water and making time to spend with animals.
Belfast Zoo look after animals that are endangered so we decided to donate some money and adopt an animal. At first we were expecting to adopt a penguin, however when the envelope arrived in school we were shocked to find out that we had actually adopted an Asian Elephant! In the Bible we read about Noah who built an Ark to save the animals when God sent a flood. In our class we are trying to be more like Noah, looking after the animals and thinking carefully about what we do.
The next time you visit the Zoo, have a look for the Asian Elephants and let us know how they are doing. We hope that the zoo will keep us up to date with how they are getting on.

Well done to all of the Year 4 children who took part in the Pedestrian Safety training. The children went out on their walk on Wednesday and were under close observation as a member of the Road Safety team came to assess their learning. Gareth talked to the teachers afterwards and said how impressed he was by the children's knowledge of signs and their Green Cross Code practice. The children who took part in the scheme will receive certificates after half-term as a reward for all of their hard work.
Have a look at this website to remind you of the Green Cross Code steps.
