Today we welcomed Nicky and Nicola from Allstate in Strabane to our school. They told the girls in year 7 all about some inspirational women in the world. The girls were given beautiful books to read and activity books to complete. We look forward to our next visit from Nicky and Nicola in November.
This week we have started learning all about fractions in numeracy. In pairs we all got a pack of smarties and worked together to find the fraction of each colour of smartie. We then worked independently to find fractions of different amounts. We know the difference between the numerator and the denominator and know to divide by the bottom and multiply the top!
Sophie was so kind to bring in her snakes skin for us all to look at today!
Sophie told us all about how snakes shed their skin to allow for further growth and to remove parasites that may have attached to their old skin. As a snake grows, its skin becomes stretched. Unlike human skin, a snakes skin doesn't grow as the animal grows. Eventually, snakes reach a point where further growth is not possible.
Another little girl who is snake mad in our class was even able to tell us if it was a boy or a girl snake from its scales! We can confirm it is a boy and his name is Popcorn.
Check out our photos and see if you can see it’s eyes!
Today we had our second Mandarin Chinese lesson with Sun. Last week we learnt how to say hello, goodbye and thank you whilst learning all about the moon festival. This week we learnt how to count to five through singing and dancing. It was great fun and we can’t wait until next week!
Friday is our favourite day in Year 1 for many reasons, mainly because it is our P.E day! The children have been changing themselves independently and learning how to find a space. Some children are extremely fast at getting changed which means they can help those who maybe have their shoes on the wrong feet. Our first game is a game to develop recognising colours, balance and taking turns. Please remember to send your child's P.E kit to school, we will send it home at half-term.
Today P2/3 had the first of our Mandarin Chinese lessons by Sun. We learned all about the Mid-Autumn festival which is being celebrated now around the time of the full moon. The Chinese people celebrate this festival by eating ‘Moon cake’. We got to decorate our own. Have a look!
Today p2/3 had the opportunity to listen to a talk on recycling by Yvonne from Derry/Strabane council. We learned about all the different materials which can be recycled in our blue bins and what the recycled materials can be made into.
Today Sun came to teach us Mandarin. She told us a bit about herself and taught us about the Mid-Autumn festival held in China. We know that moon cake is ate to celebrate this festival and beautiful dances are performed about the moon. Sun gave us our own moon cakes to decorate and colour in, it was great fun!
Each Thursday Year 1 get the opportunity to engage in outdoor play along with Mrs Pollock and Mrs Gregson's class. We have so much fun making use of our fantastic resources. Some children have brought along waterproof clothing and wellies, what a great idea! Take a look at a few of our photos.
