Latest News - Year 5/6

7th Dec 2018

We have been so busy in P5/6 which is why we have been so quiet updating all our lovely parents with our news. A couple of weeks ago we had an animation workshop delivered by the nerve centre.  We learnt all about how movies are made and then we made our own movie using a green screen based on Disney’s movie ‘Small Foot’. It was all very exciting and we all had lots of fun.

Today we wore odd socks to school to raise awareness for Anti bullying week.  In assembly we watched a short video about having respect for other people.  Our odd socks were worn to represent that we are all unique, we definitely saw some really unique odd socks today.

Last week our class started Pushkin workshops with Frank Galligan. In groups we created a verse for a school eco song to the tune of Bob Dylan’s hit single ‘Blowin in the wind’. Frank encouraged us to think about issues affecting our world and animals that are being affected.

This week we travelled to Melmount Nursing Home where we performed our song to the residents. Throughout the afternoon children had opportunities to chat with the residents and Frank told us all many funny stories and read some of his favorite poems to us which we really enjoyed.

Today was a very exciting day in our classroom as it was our first visit from Baby Ralph and his Mummy as part of our Roots of Empathy Program. The children welcomed Baby Ralph by singing to him and touching his feet as his Mummy walked him around our special green blanket. We found out what Baby Ralph can do and can’t do just yet. We measured and weighed Baby Ralph and compared him to our Roots of Empathy doll. We thoroughly enjoyed our session with Baby Ralph and already looking forward to his next visit. Thank you Ralph and Victoria!

This week we have started learning all about fractions in numeracy.  In pairs we all got a pack of smarties and worked together to find the fraction of each colour of smartie.  We then worked independently to find fractions of different amounts.  We know the difference between the numerator and the denominator and know to divide by the bottom and multiply the top!

Sophie was so kind to bring in her snakes skin for us all to look at today!

Sophie told us all about how snakes shed their skin to allow for further growth and to remove parasites that may have attached to their old skin.  As a snake grows, its skin becomes stretched. Unlike human skin, a snakes skin doesn't grow as the animal grows. Eventually, snakes reach a point where further growth is not possible.

Another little girl who is snake mad in our class was even able to tell us if it was a boy or a girl snake from its scales!  We can confirm it is a boy and his name is Popcorn.

Check out our photos and see if you can see it’s eyes!
